Capital Campaign

Goal: $35.9 million
Raised to Date: $28.2 million
An additional $3 million is pending from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture is engaged in a $35.9 million Capital Campaign to generate funds for a new, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary facility that will open in early 2009.

The Center will be a welcoming place where all people can celebrate and experience the many contributions African Americans from Western Pennsylvania and people of African descent throughout the world have made to American culture. The Center will include a 479-seat theater, exhibition galleries, an education center, café, gift shop and multipurpose spaces for community events.

To make this dream real, we need the support of the entire community. The August Wilson Center is the recipient of three generous challenge grants; the Washington Challenge Grant, The Heinz Endowments Challenge Grant and the Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant. They have been awarded to help us secure our Capital Campaign goal and stimulate financial support from the community.

The August Wilson Center thanks the Capital Campaign Steering Committee members for their generous donations of time, financial support and ideas.

Challenge Grants

Local and national individuals and organizations have provided gifts in the form of Challenge Grants - grants made to encourage community giving through matching contributions. These grants help your gift leverage more financial support for the August Wilson Center.

The August Wilson Center has received three Challenge Grants to help us secure our Capital Campaign goal, as well as to stimulate financial support from the community.

One in a Million Challenge Grant

The August Wilson Center Board and Steering Committee members Nancy and Milton Washington established the One in a Million Challenge Grant to encourage local African American support for the Center. The challenge grant will match $1 for every $2 raised from the local African American community. The challenge goal is to raise a total of $1 million.

Heinz Endowments Challenge Grant

The Heinz Endowments Challenge Grant will give the August Wilson Center the $1.25 million outstanding from the $3.5 million grant awarded to the Center in December 2004 once the remaining two grant conditions are met:

We encourage and welcome everyone's participation as we work together to not only bring a new cultural resource to our community, but to establish something significant that will serve future generations. Be at the center of this landmark community effort by making your contribution today.

Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant

The Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant will give the August Wilson Center $1.2 million if we secure the Capital Campaign goal of $35.9 million by May 1, 2008.
